TEXT ALBERT TAY

The Wind and the Tiger

We look at two premium diesel-powered SUVs and see how they are similarly endowed yet very different in character.

Back in March, I looked at three premium medium-sized SUVs: the Jaguar F-PACE, Porsche Macan and the Mercedes GLC 250 Coupé. Maserati’s first SUV is fashionably late to the party and only the diesel variant is available here. I gave the Levante a spin and compared it to the Macan S Diesel which I consider the class benchmark in terms of driving dynamics. After all, even the Jaguar F-PACE had to revised in the light of the performance of the Tiger (“Macan” in Indonesian). How does the only Italian luxury SUV fare against the German rival?

But first, you need to consider recent growing environmental concerns of diesel vehicles. It cannot be denied that the refinement of diesel car engines has improved tremendously. The characteristic engine vibration of the Levante and Macan is discreet and cannot be perceived inside the cabin. Pollutant emission of diesel engines has also reduced considerably with the current Euro 5 and upcoming Euro 6 standards. However, after enjoying a period of good press that diesel engines produce relatively less carbon dioxide emissions than petrol engines, studies have emerged that diesel power is not as clean as previously believed. The Volkswagen emissions scandal has also cast some doubt on the reliability of test results. The government has indicated that recent tax reductions on diesel engines and diesel fuel are likely to be reversed.

Maserati Levante 3.0 Diesel

Maserati believes that the Levante is “the most exciting choice in the luxury SUV segment.” Originally named Kubang (Javanese wind), the Maserati SUV became Levante, a Mediterranean wind that can suddenly turn from calm to tempestuous. The Levante therefore promises to have multiple personalities: you can can be pampered in a luxurious GT on the road and be fully capable off road. The claim to driving like GT would seem is credible since it is based on the Ghibli and Quattroporte sedans.

Design and Interior

The Levante’s styling is striking and unmistakably Maserati. The front is dominated by the massive grille and Trident logo. The interior design and dashboard are shared with the Ghibli and Quattroporte which is not a negative. There is the expected Italian opulence that makes the Jaguar F-PACE’s interior appear low rent. You might even expect the Levante to be more luxuriously appointed considering that the asking price is considerably more than the Macan and the rest of the competition.

Although the Levante’s external dimensions are bigger than the Macan (similar in size to  the Porsche Cayenne), the cabin seems similar to the Macan’s interior space. I suspect it could be that the engine needs to shifted closer to the centre to achieve the 50/50 weight balance. The Levante also has a slightly bigger boot (580L vs 500L vs 670L for the Cayenne).

Performance

Can it go like the wind? Both the Levante and Macan have similar power and torque from a three-litre turbo diesel engine. It is impressive that the Levante is almost 400kg heavier than the Macan but yet is only six tenths of a second slower in acceleration. The German is understandably more nimble given that it is lighter and more compact but the Italian never feels too large or unwieldy. The air suspension, electronic damping, all-wheel drive and 50/50 split surely helps to make the Levante seem relatively light footed.

The ZF 8-speed transmission shifts smoothly and the large paddles are a joy to use. But shifting the stick from “drive” and “reverse” can be iffy since you sometimes get “neutral” when you want to reverse. Hats off to Maserati for using hydraulic power steering for natural feedback in an era of electric ones which often dull the road feel. Select the off-road mode and the Levante rises by up to 40mm which underlines its capabilities when going off the beaten road.

Porsche Macan S Diesel

Porsche practically invented the luxury SUV segment 15 years ago with the Cayenne. So unlike Maserati, Stuttgart has had many years of experience refining their interpretation of the premium SUV.

Design & Interior

The Macan is smart and purposeful looking. The recessed headlights and the large aggressive front air intakes are characteristically Porsche as is the silhouette of the bonnet inspired by the 917. The Macan’s side profile, the 918 Spyder-style side blades, distinctive black brake calipers and the 911-inspired rear all come together for the Porsche look.

The interior is typical Porsche with a good blend of luxurious comfort and sportiness. The three-spoke steering wheel also influenced by the 918 Spyder is clutter free and integrates well with the shift paddles. The cockpit layout is snug and the central console’s many buttons are familiar to Porsche fans and not difficult for first-timers to learn. Since the Macan is older, it comes only with relatively basic connectivity and safety technologies which are not as comprehensive as those found in the Levante.

Performance

Where the Macan truly shines is in the way it tackles the tarmac. The refined power plant (258hp/580Nm) is slightly quicker than the Levante (0-100km/h in 6.3s). Paired with the seven-speed PDK twin-clutch transmission and Porsche Stability Management, you get to enjoy agility and confidence at speed. I kept the Sport button permanently engaged for a more aggressive mapping of the throttle and transmission. The Macan scintillates with its tight handling and balance even though it does not have the 50/50 weight distribution of the Levante. While it isn’t like a taller 911, the Macan should help to dispel any doubt that a vehicle can be sporty and afford adequate utility- the very definition of a Sport Utility Vehicle. No wonder that the Macan remains the class benchmark for keen drivers despite having been around for a few years.

Engine: 3-litre V6 Turbodiesel
Transmission: Automatic 7-speed PDK
Power: 258hp @ 4,000-4,250 rpm
Torque: 580Nm @ 1,750 – 2,500 rpm
0-100km/h: 6.3s
Top Speed: 230 km/h
Weight: 1880kg
Fuel economy: 6.3 L/100km
Boot capacity: 500-1500 L
Dealer: Stuttgart Auto

Overall

To appreciate either of these two SUVs, you have to get past growing environmental concerns regarding diesel-powered premium cars which have grown in numbers recently. If you cherish Italian engineering and craftsmanship and the exclusivity that comes with not buying German or British, you will have to go for the Levante. There is no SUV with a similar heritage, charm and flair. If in the matter of SUVs you are more mainstream and prefer the tried and tested especially in terms of driving satisfaction, you would choose the Macan. Or perhaps its forerunner sibling, the Cayenne.
